Neal's blog: Wow, it has been a while!

Apologies for taking so long to update you on what I’ve been up to and being honest I don’t even know where to start.

I guess working backwards Tarantino-style would be easier. Just yesterday I attended a meeting around our college external engagement and how we aim to use the restructuring of the new Edinburgh council departments to get the best out of these new developments for the college and students in particular. It was great to hear from the new Head of Commercial Development in the meeting and having had a catch-up conversation with him earlier in the week I see this relationship having mutual benefits in the future.

Before the meeting I was over at the Sighthill campus meeting all the lovely class reps out there, unfortunately I had to leave early but I have been told the meeting went really well and all that valuable information provided at the meeting will be collated and passed onto senior management in the future.

Same goes to all the other class rep conferences held so far, we can’t thank you enough for your attendance and providing us with the information we need to hold the college to account and even suggest possible resolutions for these problems and being at the centre of the solutions.

Over the last few weeks or so the office staff and elected officers at ECSA have been receiving Scottish Mental Health First Aid Training. This training has put us in a position where we can say all full time staff at ECSA are Mental Health First Aid trained and I’m sure we are the first department in Edinburgh College that can say so. The future looks bright at the college though in terms of dealing with Mental Health as the new Head of Student Support is very keen to offer the same training to front facing staff in the college.

Not only have we been getting trained we are currently in the process of training our new Student Engagement Officers across 3 campuses with interviews at Midlothian still ongoing. These positions allow us to advertise specific opportunities and times students can definitely find the offices open and receive C-Card information or just general enquiries and signposting to the correct support.

We are also currently working on the New Executive structure and running the elections for these posts. More information about nominations and running for these positions will be made available very soon on the website.

Make sure you all keep in touch throughout the year with any queries or if you just fancy popping in for a chat please our doors are always open.
