LGBT+ History Month 2022

LGBT+ History month marks a time in the year where we can reflect and learn from those pioneers in our history who paved the way for us and pay our respects. It’s also a chance to reflect on how we can learn from history to make the necessary steps to ensure we are all treated fairly and equally.

LGBT+ history in Scotland

Scotland has a rich LGBTQ history and a lot of it took place right on our own doorsteps. For example did you know about Dr. James Barry? Or about the historical change to school curriculum last year?

In records from 1812 detailing a trans doctor.  Dr. James Barry graduates from the University of Edinburgh Medical School. Following his death in 1865, it’s discovered he was assigned female at birth.

Right the way through to 2021 when Scotland became the first country in the world to officially add LGBT+ history to the school curriculum letting children see historical figures that they can now identify with. Check out Time for Inclusive Education for more information on their succesful campaigns and work to tackle prejudice with an educational approach.
