We were delighted to run the Big Student Thank You Awards again this year, an initiative which gives students the chance to say 'thank you' to those College lecturers and staff who have helped them over the course of this academic year.
In a year that has had its tough moments, we know that there have been people across the College who have made a real difference to the student community. Overall, we received 226 nominations and were really touched by the appreciative messages that students shared. Here’s an example of one of our favourites, nominating Raymond Kelly, who lectures in Construction.
"Raymond is a legend. He's a cool guy and amazing at his job. His teaching style is clear, easy to understand and straight to the point while having a joke and laugh. He believes in hands on learning and stands back to let students use their own initiative. If you do need help with anything painting related (not necessarily to do with course work), he will take the time to explain or help in any way he can, even staying after class has finished for the day.
He's chill, friendly and approachable but also straight up and genuine. Raymond is very understanding of people's personal circumstances and has gone out of his way on many occasions to help me out, from sourcing materials I've needed to giving potential employers recommendations for me (even told one to give me a van because he knows I need one haha).
As a woman entering a male dominated environment, Raymond really helped make me feel not only welcome but more importantly capable. I can't thank him enough for all his wisdom and the confidence he has inspired in me. Cheers Ray 😁 "
And the winners are…
Kerry Dempsey – Best Lecturer Construction and Engineering
Scott Johnston – Best Lecturer Creative Industries
Kirsten Harrold – Best Lecturer Health, Wellbeing and Social Science
Nichola Heneke – Best Lecturer Tourism, Hospitality and Business
Liam Dodds – Guiding Hand Award for Support Staff
Our Outstanding Lecturer of the Year is Kerry Dempsey from Automotive Engineering, who we surprised with her award while she was lecturing at Sighthill campus. Kerry received 19 nominations from her students, including this one:
"Kerry is an awesome teacher and a great role model. It's a shame there aren't more female instructors like Kerry in automotive engineering. I don't think there is anything she doesn't know about cars. Thank you, Kerry for all your help. I've learnt so much from you over the past few years! "
It’s now our turn to say thank you to everyone who submitted nominations, highlighting the dedication, hard work and kindness that lecturers and support staff have shown students this year. To read all of the heart-warming nominations we received, you can use the search box below.
Nominations may have closed, but it’s never too late to say ‘thank you’ to recognise someone who has gone the extra mile and helped you this year. So go ahead and message them, you might just make their day.
I want to say thank you to Adelle because, I’ve moved here all alone, I knew nobody on my course and there’s not been one time where I’ve felt unwelcome or out of place because she’s been there, she constantly supports me every day, pushing me to the best of my ability. She notices if I’m having a bad day and always makes sure I am ok. She’s more than just a lecture to me, she’s absolutely amazing and I can’t thank her enough for everything she’s done for me this year and can’t wait to continue college life with her has my lecturer. So Adelle thank you so much for everything and never giving up on me x

Maths has never ever been my strong subject. In fact, it’s always been one of my weakest ones. I need a good grade in maths to progress further in my studies and I can say confidently that Sue is the best maths lecturer I have ever had. She breaks things up in manageable chunks and provides excellent presentations that are incredibly user friendly, by offering lots of examples and practice questions that we can look back on and colour codes different areas to help us make sense of them, and always gives regular feedback on our work. Thank you Sue - I won’t miss maths but I will miss you!

Liz McCafferty

I arrived on the Costume for Stage and Screen course with so little experience of making anything that everything was new but Liz made it so much fun and was so supportive. I really don't think I would have achieved half as much without her being our lecturer - she believed that I could do more ambitious designs and helped me do it.
When I was having a difficult time personally she was very kind and took practical steps that really made a difference. I have loved this first year at Edinburgh College and that's down to Liz.
Callum has been the best lecturer - he has so much experience which really enriches our curriculum and gives us more background on what we’re learning which actually helps us to understand better and get different ideas. He is approachable, friendly (I have never seen him in a bad mood all year!) and supports us to achieve our potential. Thank you Callum

Dominic Phillips
Media, Music & Sound Production, Media Music and Sound Production
It almost feels like cheating and unfair putting Dom but his teaching skills are possibly the best I've ever experienced. Even for me as a slow learner I've picked up so many more skills this year thanks to Dom. This may sound strange but as someone with OCD there is something very clean and tidy about how Dom goes around his teaching, from his in class theory work, practical work and online video tutorials.
Due to going through absolute hell this year, 5 funerals, drama in halls, police involved, moving flat, being cyber attacked, Dom has been very understanding and supportive. This is not his fault but considering he is only given a few hours each lesson to teach us (we wish they were longer and that's a compliment) he does very well to educate us in this timeframe.
As I'm currently studying the HNC Television and Film course, they've recently just added the BA Film, a 1 year top up after HND. If Dom wasn't teaching on it I'm unsure if i would of stayed on. I heard from another lecturer he maybe wasn't going to be but now hearing he is I will happily stay at college instead of university - there's a 3rd year up option at Napier after HND.

He always took the time to explain complex topics clearly and never made me feel afraid to ask questions. Thanks to him, I feel much more motivated and capable of reaching my goals.
Michael Ferrie
Computing
This was the best and most put together unit I took all year. He was extremely friendly and guided the students to exactly what they needed. He took specific actions to not give any answers, nor have harsh requirements, but instead helped the whole class troubleshoot and determine the right course of action to develop our problem solving skills. Was a pleasure to have him as a lecturer.
The unit in question was Networking Technology and Computer Networking Concepts, practice, and introduction to security. He did the unit in a backwards format, allowing us near unlimited access to the physical networking devices, so that we could input the commands as we learn them to keep honing our skills with the Cisco command line.

Thank you, Isela Shipton, for your brilliant work, incredible dedication, and strong effort in teaching people in our group English.
I even couldn't imagine, how difficult to keep a person's attention every time and every day, provided that everyone in our group had their own lives, problems, etc.
You incredible person.
Your explanation of grammar is wonderful, and the tests and tasks are very precisely. Probably it's the hardest kind of work for me, and I'm glad to know you and I can study English in your group. Edinburgh College is much stronger with you. Thank you so much. I appreciate you and your work.

She is a great teacher. I am so lucky to be her student this year. All my progress is thanks to her and Jo millar. It was really good semester for me.
Really helped me getting my application through where the previous attempts had failed and didn't give up on me.
I would not have been able to do as well as I have without a laptop and things she did for me.
Rik is so far, one of the very best teachers I've had in my academic life - very easy to approach, flexible, understanding and of course very knowledgeable too. Always willing and available to help and support with anything no matter how silly the questions might be. Also goes the extra mile to find additional information and resources required to help with our studies both individually and collectively. Plus Rik has a good sense of humour too - something that is very useful for those times when you think you're loosing it as per all the new things you're learning and trying to 'upload' to your already overloaded brain especially as a mature student. Wouldn't trade Rik for another teacher for this course though and of course any other course he takes, thanks
Rik Weightman
Quality and Improvement
Rik has been so supportive and available to the whole class during this session. Personally, it has helped me to be comfortable going back into the college environment at an older stage in life. He listens to everyone's thoughts and offers solutions to problems. You can tell Rik loves what he does and he passes that enthusiasm on to the students every session.
