Every year on 8th March, EC Students' Association joins with our vibrant student community to celebrate International Women's Day. This year, we will be hosting a stall in the Granton hub, where you can join us for relaxed crafting activities at 11am-2pm on Friday 8th March. We're working on a playlist of uplifting tunes by female artists and you'll be able to add your favourite empowering songs to the play queue. Everyone is welcome along and we'll be encouraging you to think about how you can elevate and celebrate the women in your lives, whether that's in your classroom, at work, in your local community or online.
The first International Women's Day was held back in March 1911, and since then it has grown into a day of collective global activism that belongs to everyone who is committed to equality for all women. As world-renowed feminist Gloria Steinem once explained: "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor any one organisation, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights". The theme for this year's event is called #InspireInclusion and we hope that everyone will feel inspired to take part.
One of our students who is currently studying at Granton will be joining us to read some poems she has written especially for the event. We're delighted to share her poem "Wao!!! Women 2024" here and hope you find it as inspiring as we do. Come along on Friday 8th March to hear more.
Wao!!! Women 2024 by one of our students
Wao!!! Wao!!! Wao!!! Women!!! Yo-yo-yoyooo
A Wao Woman is always self-loved, strong that nothing can disturb her peace of mind.
She never quits, she knows how to handle challenges,
She sees struggles as triumphs, thinks well of herself,
Not in loud words but in great deeds.
She talks health, happiness, success to herself and every person she meets.
Looks at the sunny side of everything and makes her optimism come true.
Always remembers that her hard work will work out over time,
If she persists, her prize is more than rubies.
A Wao Woman is made of special qualities, her values are exceptional,
Seeing life as a ladder, to climb to the top of that mountain.
Embraces good opportunities, is always encouraged, thinking only the best and
Expects only the best as long as she’s true to the best in her.
She is just as enthusiastic about the success of others
As she is about hers, forgetting the mistakes of the past
And to press on to the greater achievements of the future.
Wears a cheerful expression at all times,
And gives a smile to every living creature she meets.
Wao Woman gives so much time to improve herself,
She has no time to criticise others,
She’s too large for worry,
Too noble for anger,
Too strong for fear,
And too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
She lives in the faith that the whole world is on her side.
