Well, this year has moved pretty fast. If you didn’t stop and look around once in a while, you might’ve missed it.

With the Ferris Bueller references out the way, this year has been something incredibly special and rather life changing in fact. I have done so many things I never thought I would do when I started in this role a year ago. So I thought I’d go through some of my favourite moments.

Moving offices at Sighthill over the summer last year was a fantastic project to work on as a team, we all had different things to do and it let us bond as a team. Something that sticks out in my mind from this was when Adam and I were tasked with building the TV stand for the office. After a lot longer than it should have taken, and taking it partially apart then fixing it, we did eventually build the stand, but not without struggle and a lot of laughter. Needless to say, we weren’t given much more DIY for the rest of the year haha.

In early February we were invited to Dundee University for a Student Unions Officer Day, it was so much fun to meet and work with some other student associations. This is where one of our on-going projects was founded, which is a piece of collaborative work across all the student unions/associations in Edinburgh. I also think I was running nearly purely on caffeine that day, I ended up getting home, finishing my university application, and completely crashing. It was a busy but fantastically rewarding day.

In May, I was helping run the college’s Understanding Gender Identity Workshop that is delivered to staff. Due to a calendar mix up, my fault oops, I ended up on holiday in Lanzarote when it was running. To make up for the mix up, I took the morning out of my holiday and joined the workshop call from my holiday. This was something I cared a lot about and had helped shape the content of the workshop, so I was not about to miss it.

Finally, I just want to talk about how great it was to get to work with such a supportive team. My experience with ECSA is something incredibly unique and something not a lot of people get to do. I don’t think I’m going to forget any time soon when Adam listened to me do a presentation on boats and we couldn’t stop laughing the whole way through or helping Sukinder bring her welfare activities to life (there will be an endless supply of craft materials at Granton from now on lol). I have made connections for life this year, and got to help make a difference to the college community I spent the last few years being a part of. I can’t wait to hear about what happens next year and how much good work the officers will do.

So, thank you to Al, Grum and Genevieve for all the support. And I will be leaving you in the more than capable hands of Adam, Mary and Sukinder, good luck guys!
