Enhancing Well-Being while Studying

Sukinder Landa, Vice President Welfare 24-25

Hello everyone! It’s Sukinder here, your VP Welfare.

As we dive into September, many of us are juggling the return to classes, part-time jobs, and other commitments.

It’s the perfect time to focus on enhancing our well-being  — whether that's at Edinburgh College, in a part-time job, or even while working on assignments at home.

Let’s talk about some simple yet effective ways to maintain both our physical and mental health during this busy time.

Here are three key tips to help you stay well:

1. Prioritise Your Mental Health and Take Regular Breaks

At Edinburgh College, we believe that your mental health is a priority. It’s important to take regular breaks to recharge your mind, especially when you’re feeling overwhelmed with work or studies. Even a short break—just a few minutes to stretch, breathe deeply, or take a mindful walk—can significantly reduce stress and help you reset.

Don’t forget to check out the resources available on the Edinburgh College Wellbeing Hub for more support and guidance.

2. Stay Active and Maintain Good Posture

Staying active throughout the day is crucial for both your physical and mental well-being. Try incorporating movement into your routine, whether it’s taking a walk around campus between classes, using the stairs instead of the lift, or doing some quick stretches at your desk. Maintaining good posture is also essential, especially when you’re spending long hours studying or working on a computer. Make sure your study or workstation is set up properly to avoid strain on your back or neck. Remember, keeping your body active and comfortable can help improve concentration and reduce stress.

3. Foster a Supportive Environment and Balance Your Commitments

Creating a positive environment, whether in the classroom, at work, or at home, is key to maintaining well-being. Support your classmates and colleagues by fostering open communication and encouraging teamwork. It’s also vital to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Be mindful of your commitments and set boundaries to avoid burnout.

Make sure to allocate time for relaxation, hobbies, and social activities to recharge. Remember, balancing your studies and personal life will help you stay focused and motivated.

Let’s make September a month dedicated to workplace wellness here at Edinburgh College! By prioritising mental health, staying active, and fostering supportive environments, we can all work towards a healthier, more productive year. Remember, small steps towards well-being can lead to significant positive changes in your overall college experience.

Stay well and take care of you & your friends. Hopefully see you at one of our events on campus soon!
