Celebrate Iranian New Year at Edinburgh College Sighthill Campus!
Students and staff are invited to join usΒ for a vibrant celebration of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year! This special event will be a great opportunity to experience and learn about a rich cultural tradition.
Nowruz, meaning "New Day," marks the beginning of spring and has been celebrated for over 3,000 years across Iran and many other countries. Rooted in ancient Persian traditions, it symbolises renewal, hope, and the triumph of light over darkness.
A key part of Nowruz celebrations is the Haft-Sin table, an arrangement of seven symbolic items that each start with the Persian letter "S." These typically include:
- Sabzeh (sprouted wheat or lentils) β representing rebirth and growth
- Samanu (sweet pudding) β symbolising strength and prosperity
- Senjed (dried oleaster fruit) β signifying love and wisdom
- Seer (garlic) β for health and protection
- Seeb (apple) β representing beauty and good health
- Serkeh (vinegar) β symbolising patience and wisdom
- Sumac (a red spice) β representing the sunrise and the victory of light over darkness
This event is a wonderful chance to discover and appreciate different cultures within our diverse college community. Whether you're familiar with Nowruz or learning about it for the first time, come along and take part in this joyful tradition!
