ECSA is looking for a student who wants to get a bit more involved in what we do - we're looking for you to become a Student Trustee. ECSA are in particularly interested in having a gender balanced trustee board and would encourage applications from students who identify as women.

As a trustee, you will serve until next academic term (August 2017) and will attend several trustee meetings over the course of the year. Playing an important role in shaping the work of ECSA, as you will be making decisions that affect the future of ECSA during a very critical time. Your main role is to make sure ECSA is acting in the best interest of students. In a nutshell: trustees are what ensures ECSA is here not just for the students of today but for the future! Full training for Trustees is provided and is compulsory for all trustees serving on the Board.

The big piece of work for trustees in the coming year will be creating an ECSA strategic plan, the vision for ECSA’s future growth & development. It’s really important this reflects what students want to see from ECSA.

In short, if you care about making sure ECSA is around in the future then you should be a trustee

The ECSA Trustee board consists of the President and one Vice-President, 2 Student Trustees and 3 External Trustees. A trustee board is a key part of compliance for an independent charity, registered with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR). The Board of Trustees has ultimate responsibility to OSCR for the running of ECSA.

Items covered by the Board of trustees include:

  • Financial scrutiny
  • Strategic planning
  • Risk Assessment and monitoring
  • Legal Compliance

The Board of Trustees have 4 meetings per year plus other social and networking events. There is not a specific Job Description for the ECSA Trustees as the responsibilities are the same for all trustees in any organisation.  These can be summarised as:

  • To act in the interests of ECSA
  • To ensure that ECSA acts in a way that is consistent with the Constitution and in particular its Charitable Objects
  • To act with reasonable care and diligence
  • To ensure that ECSA complies with appropriate legislation.

Term of Office

Once appointed, the new Student Trustee will take office for the remainder of the academic year and depending on students status in the following academic year student trustees may continue their role or a new group of student Trustees will be recruited.
