EC Students' Association and the College, have been shortlisted in the Responsible Business of the Year category for our work in supporting students during the cost-of-living crisis. This has included the launch of the free breakfast club, the winter fair, our new partnership with foodbanks and the continued success of the Swap Shops and Community Fridges.

Overall, Edinburgh College has been shortlisted in two categories at this year’s Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. The College has also been named as a finalist in the Inspiring Partnership Award category alongside tech-experts Cadpeople for an innovative Virtual Reality (VR) programme which sees the College utilise VR to provide a unique learning experience for students studying across health and social care courses. This enables students to develop their skills and understanding of working with people suffering from dementia. You can find out more about this project here.

The winners of the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Business Awards will be announced at a ceremony held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on Thursday 9 March 2023.

EC Students' Association Director, Al Wilson, spoke about our nomination:

“Even before the most recent sharp rises in inflation, students have struggled to cope financially with the support available, but the current financial challenges are some of the most severe that students have faced in the past 20 years. At Edinburgh College over the last few years, the Students’ Association has worked in partnership with the College and local partners to deliver support and services to help students save money. This has ranged from travel advice to access to good quality food and clothing across the campuses. Over the past six months, this partnership has dramatically developed with the launch of the Breakfast Clubs, creating jobs for students and serving hundreds of students free breakfasts each week, forging a closer community atmosphere on each campus. We are proud of the partnership approach to addressing these issues and are committed to continue to do all we can to work together and make students’ lives better.

We are delighted to have been shortlisted for an award for this partnership work with the College, which has helped so many students over the past six months.”
