As the semester begins to wind down, Thursday the 25th of May will be the last week of Breakfast Club this academic year.
Since we lanched Breakfast Club around the October Break, we have seen an unprecedented number of students through the doors. Providing free breakfast items for students was one of President David Elder's key pledges for the year, and, once presented to the College back in August, there has been a real push from people across the campuses to get it up & running and provide as much as possible for our students.
From the initial survey, we had over 700 responses in just over 2 weeks from students keen to help make it a reality. Since October, we have managed to provide the free breakfast service to anyone who needs it, across all 4 campuses, 3 days per week from 8.30am to 9.30am. We have seens dozens, sometimes hundreds, of students making use of the service in a single morning on a single campus. We have set-up and run the service by employing and supporting student-staff, paid at the Real Living Wage. With momentum increasing as the academic year has gone on, we are well on our way to serving almost 20,000 breakfasts.
We are incredibly proud of the work that has been delivered by so many amazing people to help students get fed and have a decent start to their days. Not least to the incredible student-staff who have helped make the dream a reality.
This project means a lot to me, after doing significant research before hand into how students perform better with something to eat first thing in the morning.
I am proud of what we have achieved, and hope this will be kept going at Edinburgh College after I finish my year in office
David Elder, President 2022-23
We look forward to working with the College to review, continue, and develop the service for next academic year, but for now, we will be taking a break. So, if you;ve not done so already, get yourself to Breakfast Club on Tuesday 23rd, Wednesday 24th, or Thursday 25th between 8.30 and 9.30am for a bagel, a coffee, or just a friendly chat.
