Role Description:
Due to unforeseen circumstances we are reopening the recruitment process to employ a Low Carbon Travel Assistant to work at Milton Road. This part-time post will help support the Go Green Low Carbon Travel project being led by ECSA in partnership with the Development Trust and Edinburgh College Sustainability Team. Only current Edinburgh College students are eligible to apply for this role.
You will be supported by ECSA's full-time staff and elected officers, with your main point of contact being the Low Carbon Travel Officer (LCTO). They will be responsible for ensuring you are sufficiently trained and supported, so that you can achieve individual and group goals within the project.
This role will involve engaging with students across the college on the issue of sustainable transport and climate change. As such, the ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and the interpersonal skills required for working in a people-facing role, as well as an ability to work to deadlines in an office environment. Successful applicants will be expected to manage their time effectively. Knowledge and awareness of environmental issues is also highly desireable.
Successful candidates will work with their LCTO to build a weekly work schedule that fits around their classes. The office opening hours are between 9am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday and successful candidates would be expected to commit to doing their hours between normal opening office times.
This role can provide you with good experience and skills that you could benefit you in future job applications.
Supporting Information:
Edinburgh College Students' Association is running a two year project to help students travel more sustainably, and to raise awareness of climate change at the college. This project has been funded by the Scottish Government's Climate Challenge Fund (CCF), and has been based upon travel data collected by ECSA last academic year. Whilst tackling transport related issues that were consistently raised to us by students, the project also has specific goals related to outcomes for reducing students carbon emissions relating to travel as follows:
- Aim to target at least 80 students (2% of 2017-18 student drivers) to reduce their CO2 emissions by 10% through fuel efficiency training.
- Aim for 455 students (approx. 2% of all students) to reduce their CO2 emissions related to travel through walking and/or cycling all or part of the way to college.
- Aim for 40 students (1% of 2017-18 student drivers) to change their behaviour to lift share.
- Aim to target 100 students to move away from driving, being driven, or taking the taxi to campus, towards the use of public transport.
- Raise awareness of climate change amongst students.
