Celebrating Earth Day - how you can stay connected with nature during the lockdown

Happy Earth Day!

Today is Earth Day, an annual celebration of environment that happens every year on the 22nd of April. It is also the 50th Anniversary of the first ever Earth Day, which started back in 1970. This year the theme is climate action - you can find out more about Earth Day 2020 on the official website here. They have lots of suggestions of small actions you can take - from measuring your local air quality to doing a mini litter pick.

Have your say - help us design a new green space for Edinburgh College.

ECSA is working with Edinburgh College's Ccommunity Garden Coordinator to plan the creation of a new green space at Milton Road campus.

There is a grassy field at Milton Road campus that Edinburgh College wishes to plan trees on. This will create more and better green spaces at the campus for students, staff, and local residents and community groups to use. It will also help the environment and contribute to lowering the college's carbon emissons, as trees absorb carbon dioxide.

ECSA is awarded new funding to expand our successful climate change project.

We're delighted to share the news that Edinburgh College Students' Associtaion has been awarded over £190,000 as part of the Scottish Government's Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) to run another climate change project from 2020-2022. This project will offer free support to help Edinburgh College students to travel more sustainably, and to reduce their food and textile waste.

Green Student Awards

Through our Go Green - Low Carbon Travel project, we have the opportunity to reward three students for their efforts to live in a more environmentally-friendly way. So we want to hear from you if you've made a concious effort to travel in a more sustainable way this year, and especially if you've also been encouraging your friends and classmates to do the same. Your entry can also include information about any other changes you have made to your lifestyle to be more sustainable. Winning examples might include:

Travel Challenge T&Cs

In order to be eligible to receive one of the listed prizes, participants must make a change to their travel to college in the stated way by Friday 5th April. This change must be towards a more eco-friendly transport method than was previously used. They will also need to fill in a follow-up form sent by Edinburgh College Students' Association by Friday 5th April, which shows that they have successfully adhered to their pledge.

Walking Challenge T&Cs

The walking challenge runs from Monday 18th March until Friday 29th March. You can sign up to the challenge from Tuesday 12th March until Friday 22nd March in person at stalls on campus or online.

The goal of the challenge is to get the highest average daily steps over the period. You must submit your weekly steps via the walking challenge submission form. This will be emailed to you. You will also need to send a screenshot of your weekly progress to go.green@ecsa.scot. Please submit your proof by the lastest Thursday 4th April.

If you do not own a step-counter, ECSA will lend you one for the duration of the challenge. When you collect it, we will take a photocopy of your student card. If you borrow a step-counter, it must be returned in to our ECSA office by the latest date of Friday 5th April. Everyone who takes part will receive a free reusable coffee cup when they return the step-counter.

The winners will be whichever student on each campus gets the highest average step count for the period of the challenge. The winners will be announced and prizes will be available to collect on Friday 5th April. There will be 1 winner per campus, and the prize for each winner is a Fitbit Charge 3 Fitness Tracker.
